Tibetan Paintings

This book is the first attempt since 1949, when Giuseppe Tucci published his monumental opus on Tibetan painting, to present a lucid and concise analysis of the styles and aesthetics of Tibetan thankas. The author has written a history of various styles of the thankas that prevailed in Tibet between the 11th and the 19th centuries, with particular emphasis on the earlier styles which flourished between the 11th and the 15th centuries. While the other plates reproduces a number of well-known thankas from major museums and collections, the majority of the thankas have not been published before.
